Underwater hotels
Man has always been characterised by a great imagination, which he puts into practice in the creation of innovative structures that are also attractive to the public; in this case we are talking about hotels, which are generally establishments that allow people to be accommodated, where they also offer a range of services to make their stay pleasant and relaxing.
Every day we have seen the progress made in the construction of this type of structure, which has expanded to become complete leisure cities that attract the attention of tourists, especially during the holiday seasons; but perhaps people have never imagined that there could be hotels under water.
Today this is a reality, although it may not be suitable for the claustrophobic, because these hotels offer their guests the chance to sleep underwater, with the sea as a backdrop, and from their beds they can almost touch a large number of exotic fish, be close to turtles or even try to hide from a shark, seeing it so close that it seems to be within reach.
In this Top 10 of Underwater Hotels, we give you the opportunity to discover and enjoy some of the most fascinating structures created for this purpose around the world.
Atlantis, The Palm – Dubai
Dubai is one of the most famous cities in the United Arab Emirates, with a large number of modern buildings and constructions, some of which are considered to be the most exclusive in the world.
But this time we are interested in one in particular, called Atlantis, located on the island of Palma Jumeirah, surrounded by the calm waters of the Persian Gulf, of a beautiful turquoise colour, and the incredible skyline of Dubai. The hotel is considered the crown jewel of Palm Island.
It has award-winning restaurants, its own Aquaventure water park and all the attractions you need to get away from it all – from the Signature Suite you can enjoy the luxury of a 360-degree view of an aquarium with more than 65,000 marine animals.
Inaugurated in 2008, this hotel has 2000 rooms and 28 floors, and is owned by the Sol Kerzner company. Its design was inspired by the Atlantis Paradise hotel in the Bahamas.
Its architectural structure is based on two towers connected by a bridge, with two large monorail stations, known as a transport that moves on a rail to move people or goods.
This monorail is the one that allows the connection of the whole complex in general of the resort, with all the main sections located in Palm Jumeirah; which should be highlighted as part of a set of three artificial islands in the shape of palm trees, located on the shores of Jumerirah in Dubai.
As mentioned above, this hotel has a 16-hectare water park, a conference centre and some other spaces that can be purchased privately.
But perhaps one of the elements that will interest tourists the most are its spectacular rooms overlooking the blue waters of the Arabian Sea, which will make them feel as if they are in a large aquarium, surrounded by beautiful marine species, some of which they have never seen so close.
The underwater suites of this wonderful hotel are called Neptune and Poseidon, something worthy of a king; intimate, romantic rooms where you can dream while watching the marine life of the Ambassador Lagoon, as they are created with countless windows through which you can enjoy the view.
The Manta Resort – Tanzania
Moving on to Tanzania, a country located on the east coast of Central Africa, we find The Manta Resort on the island of Pemba, which forms part of the Zanzibar archipelago and is bathed by the waters of the Indian Ocean.
It is a resort that offers something different from what you are used to in most of the hotels that are established in the tropical islands. What is defined as its serenity, in addition to the luxury of being five stars, allows a close encounter with nature.
This is a magnificent example of an underwater hotel; it has a series of cabins inside the exotic island of Pemba, where there is also a unique but special suite located four metres under water, not suitable for claustrophobics, but impressive for those who want to feel like a fish.
On its deck you can sunbathe, as it is on the surface, and also enjoy a romantic meal in complete tranquillity, as it is in the middle of the sea. Afterwards you can sleep, surrounded by all the mystery of these waters of the Indian Ocean, an experience you will never forget.
Something that many will surely wonder about is the cost, and as we all know, this type of comfort is quite expensive, as we can talk about one 1,500 dollars a night; but for those who can afford it, it is worth enjoying.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island – Maldives
Rangali is one of the islands that make up the Maldives, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coasts of East Africa, the Middle East and South Africa, and the third largest in the world.
This island is home to another underwater hotel, the Conrad Maldives, which is part of the Conrad brand, known for its wide range of luxury accommodations, both hotels and resorts, owned by the Hilton Hotels Corporation, a private international company based in the United States.
This prestigious hotel is home to many whale sharks, dolphins and turtles, and has won several awards for its beauty and unique exotic appearance.
Its facilities are very luxurious and are spread over two islands, separated from each other but connected by a bridge of about 500 metres. Its interesting restaurant, identified as Ithaa Undersea, believed to be the only underwater restaurant in the world, stands out below sea level.
Here, guests can experience the sensation of literally eating in the sea, while enjoying the sight of dolphins, manta rays and turtles moving about in crystal bubbles, in harmony with the presence of people just a few centimetres away.
Incredibly, it also has an underwater chapel, a place where weddings are allowed and couples can seal their love in a very exclusive way, in the heart of the most impressive coral reef. Can you imagine getting married in a place like this?
Although this luxurious hotel does not have a luxurious underwater room, the mere fact of having its restaurant or chapel makes it attractive enough to attract the attention of tourists, since it is located almost five metres underwater, do not miss it, it is a unique experience.
Subsix at Niyama – Maldives
We continue in the Maldives, now we have the opportunity to know the hotel Subsix At Niyama; which is part of a complex located in the Dhaalu Reef, within which are a total of 56 islands, stretching up to 23 kilometres from east to west, while from north to south, reaches another 38 kilometres.
This complex is part of the Minor Hotel Group, with an extensive trajectory in the hotel field for more than four decades and with its headquarters in the city of Bangkok in Thailand.
It has been catalogued among the underwater hotels for having a discotheque and a club located below sea level in the Maldives. It is part of a luxurious resort, but with the characteristic of being accessible to anyone who wants to have a good time.
Within these marine facilities, visitors have the opportunity to sip an exotic cocktail, dance and relax, alone or accompanied, while exploring the depths of the wonderful Indian Ocean with their eyes.
There are special schedules where people can enjoy a pleasant moment on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays, from nine o’clock at night. So, after a delicious meal at the Conrad Maldives Hotel, which we already know, you can go to the Subsix in Niyama to continue your day of celebration under the sea.
Utter Inn Hotel – Sweden
The Kingdom of Sweden is a beautiful Scandinavian country located in Northern Europe and is considered to be the fifth largest country in this continent.
Although, as is well known, it does not have any tropical paradises like many of those known so far, it does have a hotel with underwater facilities, identified as Utter Inn and which we will be talking about in this section.
This magnificent hotel is located on Lake Mälaren, close to the city of Stockholm, and was inaugurated during the year 2000. It is said to be the only hotel in Sweden that has a room three metres under water, with two beds and a table, as well as several windows that offer a breathtaking view of the lake’s interior.
Despite its lack of luxury, the experience is said to be worth it, as it is submerged about three metres in the lake, but offers panoramic views in all directions.
The hotel was designed by local artist Mikael Genberg, who also designed the Manta Resort in Zanzibar. The Utter Inn Hotel in Sweden is an ideal place to spend a weekend, especially for those who love the cold.
It also has a platform created with the purpose of sunbathing, admiring all the nature around and feeling as if you were on board a ship, with the possibility of going down to the room to lie down and feel surrounded by the incredible species of Lake Mälaren, which on the other hand has fresh water that is then poured into the Baltic Sea.
Jules Undersea Lodge – USA
Changing continents, we now move to the United States to meet the next representative of underwater hotels; we are talking about the Jules Undersea Lodge, a famous American underwater hotel located in Key Largo, a region belonging to Florida.
There are four such hotels in the world, but the Jules Undersea Lodge is the only underwater hotel in the United States; it was practically born as part of an underwater research laboratory.
Curiously, the name of this prestigious hotel honours the author of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”, where his room, later divided, is considered the oldest of this type of underwater dormitory.
It is generally said that the hotel has only two independent bedrooms within a common area, but has a capacity of only about six people, although each of these accommodations has huge glass windows from which you can observe the wonderful marine fauna.
The only difficulty with this hotel is the time it takes to get there, which requires diving, so it is highly recommended for lovers of this sport. It also has all the amenities offered by other common hotels.
By way of general information, it should be noted that it is not a luxury hotel, since its two rooms are built around a steel and acrylic cabin measuring approximately 6 by 15 metres, which is submerged at a depth of approximately nine metres.
But with the exception that its security is specially controlled from the mainland in order to guarantee the integrity of these facilities and to provide the guests with all the services they require.
People enter their room through an opening in the floor, of course, to practise scuba diving, but none of this prevents it from being ideal for a pleasant weekend or even ordering a good pizza for dinner, cheer up because it can be the most unforgettable experience of your life.
Lime Spa at Huvafen Fushi – Maldives
Within these Top 10 Underwater Hotels, it is our turn to introduce you to another of those offered in the Maldives, a luxurious accommodation called the Lime Spa At Huvafen Fushi; catalogued with six stars, which offers its guests all the comforts imaginable.

The experience that the Lovers Deep offers its guests is something surprising and new; through a submarine that is the responsibility of Oliver’s Travels, an agency responsible for very exclusive trips, both in terms of castles, villas and now in the Caribbean.
The capacity of this submarine hotel, which moves through the waters of the sea, is for two people; in this case being ideal to spend a romantic night as a couple, either for a certain celebration or as part of your honeymoon; it is clear that this will be a little expensive, since its price is estimated in the order of 140,000 dollars per person per night.
Obviously, this is a sum that many people will find difficult to achieve, even in a lifetime; but for those who can afford this luxury, they will have a chef at their service to fulfil all their culinary desires, their own butler and, of course, a captain who will guide them throughout the journey and teach them about the underwater environment.
It is worth mentioning that the captain will steer this submarine according to the guests’ wishes and they will also have privacy whenever they wish. Another of the advantages offered by the Lovers Deep is that the person can change the decoration to their liking, choose what they want to see and manage their entire trip the way they want, because the submarine will be at their command, so they can enjoy a romantic evening that will be unique.
