The Corrientes River is a river in the province of Corrientes, also known as the Argentine Mesopotamia. Its two main tributaries are the Rio Parana and the Rio Uruguay.
The Uruguay River flows southwest through swamps and enters the floodplain of the Parana River near the town of Esquina.
This river is about 20 metres wide, it is a river of very calm waters in almost all its course, it has a part with a rugged relief in its eastern part and its accidental part is quite arid.
The western bank of the river is known as the Bajos del Río Corriente and has sandy areas where weeds and palm trees grow, especially one known as Palma Yatay. This part of the Corriente River is good for growing tobacco and citrus fruits.
In the upper part of the river, there is a refuge for fish species typical of estuaries, such as those found in Camaguan, thanks to the Portuguesa River in Venezuela; especially the one known as El Dorado, a fish whose fishing is totally controlled in order to preserve the species.

Pollution
A worrying alarm is the presence of glyphosate in the waters of the river, although it has been said that there is no presence of this agrochemical in the Corrientes sector. It is true that it is present in the river, but in some places it is more present than in others.
We are trying to solve the problem because of the course of this tributary and the fear that it could spread.

It originates in the Itatí Lagoon, in the centre-north of the province, and drains the large basin of the Iberá Wetlands, about 13,000 square kilometres, as we can see in the map of the rivers of this beautiful province that brings us this fantastic tributary.
Fishing the Corrientes River
There is little doubt in the international angling community that the South American Dorado is the most fished freshwater fish in the world.
The mahi mahi (Salminus maxillosus) is named for its bright golden colour. It is actually a primitive member of the salmon family.
The aggressive nature of the mahi mahi, combined with its incredibly ferocious attack, long hard runs, high jumps and fighting endurance, has attracted anglers from all over the world to the mighty Corrientes and Parana rivers.
It wasn’t until 1996 that Fishabout met a group of anglers from Argentina who were fishing for dorado with flies and light tackle in the tributaries of the Parana and the neighbouring Corrientes and its tributaries.
The range of the dorado extends from the rivers of Bolivia, southern Brazil and Paraguay to the Parana drainage in northern Argentina.

The locals call them river tigers. Although the largest of these fish are found in the main channel of the Parana, the smaller tributaries, neighbouring rivers and swamps harbour a large population of fly rod fish from 5 to 30 pounds.
Some of the waters, such as the Corrientes, are generous, flowing through swampy grasslands or estuaries such as those of the Rio Arauca in Colombia, like the spring streams where trout can be caught. The sight of a big golden flash emerging from an undercut bank to attack your fly or lure is an angler’s greatest thrill.
The River Tiger of the Northern Pampas is one of the most powerful freshwater fish to be caught on a fly rod. A fierce migratory predator with strong jaws and sharp teeth, the bright salmon-yellow fish is native to northern Argentina, southern Brazil and Bolivia.Dorado are exceptionally strong and range in size from 5 to 50 pounds. The heaviest recorded weight is 70 pounds.
Corrientes River Peru
There is a river in Peru that is also called the Corrientes. The Corrientes River in Peru has a priority use in the conservation of aquatic fauna and as a source of hydrobiological species (fish) for the riparian communities. Its main basin originates from the Amazon River.
This region was originally inhabited by the indigenous people of the Mainas tribe, who were dedicated to trading with other cities in Peru.
Around the year 1890, a man with the surname Borja from the province of Tungurahua visited this town, was later appointed political lieutenant of this region and began its economic exploitation.
Nowadays there is only a small military detachment, which is almost abandoned. These lands are currently occupied by the Shiwiar Indians, who are organised in the Shiwiar Indigenous Organisation OHSHIPAE.
Currently, the basin of this river, as well as others, has been declared a state of emergency due to the pollution of its waters.
